History

The origins of the Glaubenberg crossing goes back to Medieval times, when the region was settled by the Alemannen. New paths were made which were later used as trading routes for mules and horse-drawn carts. Historical records from 1642 mention Kaltbad as having a «very cold and healing mineral spring against gout and skin disease». . The healing waters lay in a very dark, if not eerie landscape which became a hiding place for the homeless, hated and hunted until the middle of the 19th century. The baths were, however, also used by the well-to-do, some of whom  had themselves carried up on sedan chairs. The road was extended and upgraded during the second half of the 19th century and between 1906-1920 prisoners were used to widen and improve the Canton’s Schwandstrasse. The road was then widened to 5 metres between 1931 and 1937 as by that time, the road was being used for the post bus service.

During the second world war this previously insignficiant pass road «Glaubenberg» between Entlebuch and Obwalden suddenly became of strategic importance and the Swiss Military built a 3.6m wide road. The section between Golpi and Schwandmettlen was a completely new construction but the final distance up to Glaubenberg was just an extension of the existing trading route and path.. The entire pass road has been tar-sealed since October 2010.

The «Glaubenberg» area is the largest moor landscape in Switzerland. Langis – Glaubenberg area is a paradise for cross-country skiers (40km circuit) and snowshoe hikers in winter and the road stays open up to Langis in winter. Over summer the post bus travels Langis and Sarnen on the weekends.
